Bear Creek Township was formed in 1856 from territory taken from Wilkes- Barre, Pittston, Bucks, Plains and Jenkins. The first event in this area occurred in 1779 when General John Sullivan cut a highway for his army and marched from Easton to Wilkes-Barre during the American Revolutionary War. Lumber was a major industry for the area during the 19th and early 20th centuries.
