Settlers first arrived in the early 1800s from Rhode Island. They cleared the wilderness for farmland and built log cabins. Eventually, the families also established church services and schoolhouses. During the War of 1812, residents of the community constructed a textile factory powered by water. However, while it was the first of its kind, it didn’t survive after the war ended. In 1828, Dr. John Wilson established the first post office and became the first postmaster. It wasn’t until the establishment of the post office when the village took the name Factoryville. The community continued to grow and expand and was eventually incorporated on November 12, 1883. In the early 1900s, the community realized a need for higher education. They built a school that is now a four-year institution, Keystone College.
Today, Factoryville is home to a number of local restaurants, shops, the Christy Mathewson Park, the Joint Municipal Park, and the Factoryville Public Library. On the second Saturday of August, Factoryville residents celebrate their own holiday, Christy Mathewson Day, which celebrates the baseball Hall-of-Famer who was born here on August 12, 1880. The festivities include a parade, a 6-km foot race, a chicken barbecue, games, and more.
