Moscow Borough was established in 1908 with W.B. Miller as the town’s first Burgess. While the exact origin of the name is unclear, the name was established sometime in the 1850s. A Quaker from Philadelphia named Henry Drinker was one of the first settlers in the land where he planted local beech trees. The area was temporarily named Drinker Beech before being changed to Moscow.

A rail line from Scranton to Hoboken, New Jersey made the area a hub and increased its importance in commerce. Vacationers would also visit local hotels build in the town. “The Accommodation Train” was a daily commuter train established near the early 1900s to transport people from Moscow to Scranton for work.

Today, the train is still in service and participates in Steamtown Excursions. The seasonal ventures are 26-miles round trip and take approximately two hours. The train travels through Roaring Brook to the Nay Aug Tunnel and into the Pocono Mountains.

Moscow also features a variety of restaurants and cafes featuring live entertainment several times a month. Residents enjoy summer picnics, fairs, and community activities. There are also golf courses, horseback riding, and an abundance of sports fields.

The North Pocono Public Library is just off Interstate 380 and is a member of the Lackawanna County Library System. The library holds Scranton Reads events, yoga classes, painting classes, and more.

The town is a short drive from Scranton, Dickson City, and Moosic where you will find plenty of shopping restaurants, and recreation. It’s also located two hours from Philadelphia and two and a half hours form New York City. Less than an hour away are The Crossings Premium Outlets in Tannersville, Kalahari Waterpark in the Pocono Mountains, and Great Wolf Lodge in Scotrun.

The North Pocono area encompasses many other small communities including Covington, Elmhurst, Jefferson, Spring Brook and Roaring Brook townships.
