Shavertown is a quiet and peaceful place to live in the Back Mountain area of Luzerne County. The village is within the Dallas School District which also includes nearby Franklin Township, Dallas Township, and Dallas Borough.
The quaint town features plenty of real estate opportunities with varying lot sizes and styles to span all budgets. It also features the perfect combination of nature, history, and modern living.
Shavertown has a rich history. Named after Philip Shaver, an early settler from Vienna, Austria, the area was once home to a gigantic species of legendary evergreen trees. These trees brought Philip to the “Back of the Mountain” region and required him to carve out a path among the heavily wooded lands—a trail which is now Route 309. Philip and his family constructed a sawmill in 1815 and in 1820 cut the wood for the first market Street Bridge in Wilkes-Barre.
While today those legendary evergreen trees are extinct, Shavertown still retains its natural charm. Frances Slocum State Park in Kingston Township, open every day of the year, is a popular recreation spot year-round. The lake is popular for fishing and boating and the hiking and mountain biking trails are perfect for enjoying the great outdoors.
One of the area’s most popular attractions is the Lands at Hillside Farm, a non-profit, historic, educational farm that offers delicious milk and ice cream, Mercantile and Greenhouse, as well as information on sensible and sustainable life choices.
