Settlers from Connecticut founded Waverly Township in the late 18th century. Originally called the Abington Center, the name was changed to Waverly due to the popularity of Sir Walter Scott’s Waverly novels. In 1920, the Belin family built the Waverly Community House in the center of town.
The Community House is still prominent in Waverly and provides a gymnasium, basketball court, public playground, and educational programs for young children. The building also houses the Waverly Post Office. Events held at the center are plenty ranging from an annual home and garden show to antique shows and lawn concerts.
